Raven Song

Begich Middle School

Anchorage, Alaska

2008

Description

In Athabaskan legend, Raven brought language to the people. The Begich Middle School is on Dena’ina Athabaskan land. Raven, the trickster, is ever present among us. In this sculpture he again, acts as a messenger, bringing language to the people, this time with the help from Begich School students. Raven’s body is the site where Athabaskan stories are told and the desires of many cultures new to Anchorage are mediated in the presence of Athabaskan tradition.
