Harmonic Ascension is an illuminated sculpture which serves as the center piece of the newly constructed Downtown Civic Center Plaza in Las Vegas. The sculpture is the centerpiece of a town commons, situated between the City Hall and the Court House. In the spirit of art, comedy, music, theater, and dance in the arts community of Las Vegas, the ascending spiral and unfolding of its form suggests the constant transformation and evolution of art and culture in Las Vegas. The sculpture’s form is generated by the upward spiraling movement of a violin transforming into an electric guitar. The form of the guitar is hidden within the changing forms of the sculpture, but its rotation reveals new forms that are generated by its spiraling motion suggesting a dancing figure that is 25’ tall in the center of the plaza. In this Plaza, with its stage and community commons, Harmonic Ascension offers a focal point of energy for the Downtown Civic Center Plaza at the center of the civic life of Las Vegas.
