A gem in Johnson and Fain’s plan for the Capitol Area East End Complex, this park mediates between the gardens of the Capitol Mall, the existing neighborhood and the adjacent State Education building. The park is designed as a combination of sculptural paving, a fountain, seating, fencing, and planting, which pays homage to the oak ecologies of California and the Native Americans who were sustained by and harvested the acorns. A six-foot elliptical bronze bowl cantilevers from a large granite boulder cutting a veil of water falling over river rocks creating a soothing place with the sound of water. The fountain sets a soothing tone for this park. Text etched in granite and planting which compliments the sculpture creates a fascinating and useful place.
